Despite their broad carapace and pincers, porcelain crabs are not true crabs. Belonging to the family Porcellanidae within the decapod infraorder Anomura, they are more closely related to squat lobsters and hermit crabs. They represent a classic biological example of carcinisation, an evolutionary process in which crustaceans independently develop a flattened, crab-like body form. Found in marine environments across the globe outside the polar regions, they are hugely popular among scuba divers and macro photographers for their striking patterns, tiny proportions, and intriguing behaviours. Identifying a porcelain crab in the field relies on a few key anatomical features. Unlike true crabs, which display four visible pairs of walking legs, porcelain crabs appear to have only three pairs. Their fourth pair is heavily reduced and held tightly against the carapace, while a miniature fifth pair is modified specifically for cleaning. They possess dorsoventrally flattened bodies adapted for squeezing into narrow crevices, long antennae originating outside their eyestalks, and a long, flexible abdomen folded beneath the body. Their body width typically measures less than 2.5 centimetres. Their common name reflects their delicate, fragile nature. When threatened or seized by a predator, porcelain crabs readily undergo autotomy, shedding a leg or a claw to create a distraction that allows the animal to escape into safety. These lost appendages regenerate over subsequent moults. Despite their disproportionately large chelae (claws), porcelain crabs do not use them for capturing prey. Instead, these claws serve primarily as instruments for territorial defence, repelling conspecific strangers, and maintaining microhabitats. Divers frequently encounter species that have evolved commensal relationships with other reef invertebrates. In the Indo-Pacific, the anemone porcelain crab (Neopetrolisthes maculatus) shelters amongst the stinging tentacles of carpet sea anemones, adorned in a white coat with bright red dots. In the Caribbean, Porcellana sayana shares shells occupied by large hermit crabs, while species like Lissoporcellana flagellicola cling to unbranched sea whips. Their remarkable camouflage and dramatic filter-feeding displays make them rewarding subjects for macro observation.

Locating porcelain crabs requires a keen eye for macro environments during reef or tide-pool dives. Divers should scan host organisms systematically, focusing on carpet anemones, sponges, sea whips, and the undersides of dead coral rubble. Because these crustaceans are exceptionally small—often under 2.5 centimetres across—a high-magnification macro lens or dive light is essential for observing their finer details, such as their delicate cleaning legs and feathery mouthparts. In-water etiquette is critical when approaching porcelain crabs. Because they readily shed appendages under stress, divers must avoid touching, poking, or alarming them. Never attempt to lift rocks, peel back host anemone tentacles, or flush crabs out of their hiding spots, as physical harassment can trigger autotomy or push the crab directly into predator-filled open water. When photographing anemone-associated species like *Neopetrolisthes maculatus*, maintain neutral buoyancy and position strobes gently to avoid contact with the host's delicate stinging cells. Watch patiently from a modest distance to capture them fanning their feathery setae into the passing current.

Porcelain crabs can be observed year-round throughout their vast geographic distribution, as adult individuals maintain permanent residency within their host microhabitats or reef crevices. In temperate regions such as the United Kingdom coastal waters, species like *Porcellana platycheles* are visible across all twelve months under intertidal boulders and shallow rocky shores, with optimal diving conditions occurring during calmer summer months between May and September. In tropical and subtropical ecoregions, including the Indo-West Pacific (such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan) and the Caribbean Sea, water temperatures remain warm year-round, allowing porcelain crabs to remain active continually. Regional diving seasons are largely dictated by weather patterns rather than crustacean abundance. For instance, the calmest conditions for spotting species in the Indo-Pacific coral triangle occur outside local monsoon seasons. Population pulses occur after settling megalopae larvae undergo metamorphosis, leading to dense post-settlement aggregations in mussel beds, rocky tide pools, and coral rubble fields throughout late spring and summer.

Habitat

Porcelain crabs inhabit marine environments across all the world's oceans except the polar waters of the Arctic and Antarctic. Their highest species richness occurs in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific, though substantial populations exist in the Caribbean, the eastern Pacific from Alaska to Baja California, and temperate European shores surrounding the British Isles. Ecologically, porcelain crabs occupy the intertidal zone down to shallow subtidal reef slopes. Their dorsoventrally flattened carapaces are specifically adapted for navigating narrow, confined spaces. They shelter beneath loose stones, within intertidal tide pools, inside dense mussel beds, and amidst coral rubble. Many species are specialized obligate or facultative commensals, living in close association with specific hosts. These hosts include large sea anemones (such as *Stichodactyla* carpet anemones), sponges, soft corals, unbranched sea whips (family Ellisellidae), bivalve mollusks, and the shells of large hermit crabs. In certain California mussel beds, densities can reach up to 860 individuals per square metre.

Diet

Unlike true predatory crabs that use heavy pincers to crush or capture prey, porcelain crabs are specialized filter feeders. Their primary diet consists of micro-plankton, floating diatoms, unicellular algae, organic detritus particles, and tiny free-swimming crustaceans suspended in the water column. To feed, porcelain crabs deploy long, feathery hair-like structures called setae located on their extended mouthparts (maxillipeds). Acting like miniature fan-nets or fine-meshed brooms, these setal structures are rhythmically swept through the passing water current to snare drifting nutrient particles. Once particles are trapped, the crab retracts the mouthpart to transfer the food directly to its mouth. Feeding occurs continuously day and night whenever water motion or currents carry sufficient food particles past their shelter. Their large claws play no role in food acquisition and are reserved exclusively for territorial defence, repelling conspecific rivals, and deterring potential predators.
