In Hawaiian waters, specimens display a mixture of purple and red markings. Divers approaching a pair should move slowly from the side, remaining close to the seabed while keeping profile and lighting low. Avoid casting direct shadows over their hiding spots, as sudden light shifts cause them to retreat deep into cover. Because these shrimp are small (3 to 5 centimetres), an approach distance of 15 to 20 centimetres is often achievable with good buoyancy control. For macro photographers, a 100mm or 105mm macro lens coupled with a dioptre provides the ideal magnification to fill the frame. Position a single strobe to provide side lighting, which highlights the detailed texture of their spotted carapace and paddle claws without washing out their delicate colours.
