The convictfish (Pholidichthys leucotaenia), often referred to by divers and aquarists as the convict blenny or engineer goby, is an extraordinary, elongate teleost belonging to its own unique family, Pholidichthyidae. Despite its colloquial names, it is neither a true blenny nor a goby. Juveniles and adults present strikingly different colour morphs, a phenomenon that frequently confuses underwater observers. Juvenile convictfish display a bold pattern of velvety black with intense, horizontal white-to-yellow stripes, closely mimicking the venomous striped eel catfish (Plotosus lineatus). As they mature into adulthood, their slender, eel-like bodies transform, adopting an intricate, reticulated mosaic of vertical dark-brown and creamy-yellow bars and blotches resembling classic convict prison attire. They possess continuous dorsal and anal fins that merge seamlessly with a small, rounded caudal fin, a scaleless skin texture, and a blunt head featuring expressive, watchful eyes and fleshy lips adapted for shifting substrate. Ecologically, the convictfish is famed for its subterranean engineering and unprecedented social system. Found widely across the warm tropical waters of the central Indo-Pacific, including the Coral Triangle, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea, these fish construct extensive, labyrinthine burrow systems beneath coral heads and sandy reef flats. Adults are almost entirely subterranean, spending their adult lives excavating, cleaning, and expanding intricate tunnels by scooping up mouthfuls of gravel and fine sand before spitting it out onto the surrounding seabed. In contrast, thousands of schooling juveniles emerge during daylight hours to forage above the reef, moving in a mesmerising, undulating ball that hovers over the home burrow entrance, darting back underground en masse at the slightest hint of danger. For scuba divers and macro photographers, observing a convictfish colony in action is an utterly captivating encounter. Approaching a patch of mixed sand and patch reef, divers are often greeted by a shimmering cloud of striped juveniles flowing like a single ribbon across the coral heads. If one settles patiently near the substrate, a massive, leopard-patterned adult head may slowly emerge from the subterranean darkness, cautiously bulldozing a cascade of sand out into the open water before slithering back into its labyrinth. Witnessing this parental dedication, paired with the sheer architectural wonder of their burrow networks, underscores the intricate evolutionary specialisations that define healthy tropical reef ecosystems.

Encountering convictfish requires patience, low profile, and meticulous buoyancy control. Because they inhabit the interface between sand patches and fragile coral rubble, divers should hover at least a metre above the sea floor, avoiding any fin kicks that could stir up blinding silt or damage delicate benthic life. Approach the burrow entrance slowly using slow, steady breathing to avoid startling the schooling juveniles, which will retreat underground if shadowed or threatened. Photographers will benefit from a dedicated macro lens (60mm or 105mm) or a close-up wet dioptre. Position dual strobes with diffusers to soften shadows around the burrow entrance, and set a fast shutter speed (1/200s or faster) to freeze the rapid, serpentine undulations of the juveniles. Never poke, prod, or block burrow entrances.

Best Season

Diving to see the convictfish is possible year-round throughout its equatorial Indo-Pacific range, though optimal visibility and calm sea conditions dictate the premier windows. In Indonesia, particularly around Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea, liveaboard conditions are outstanding from October to April, when seas are glassy and plankton blooms subside, offering crystal-clear viewing over shallow coral slopes. In the Philippines, destination hotspots like Anilao, Puerto Galera, and Dumaguete deliver prime diving between November and May during the dry northeast monsoon. In Papua New Guinea, conditions across Milne Bay and Kimbe Bay are exceptional from April to June and again between September and December, providing tranquil waters ideal for patient macro exploration along coastal rubble zones.

Habitat

The convictfish is an obligate burrowing species restricted to the warm, shallow tropical marine environments of the western and central Indo-Pacific. Its range extends across the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, with strong population concentrations throughout the Coral Triangle. They typically inhabit sheltered coastal reefs, calm lagoons, reef flats, and the sand-and-rubble fringes of coral patch reefs at depths ranging between 1 and 30 metres, most frequently in 3 to 15 metres. Convictfish require a mixed substrate of loose sand, coral rubble, and large, stable coral boulders under which they can excavate their extensive, multi-chambered subterranean tunnels without structural collapse.

Diet

The convictfish exhibits a remarkably specialised feeding strategy that varies drastically across its life stages. Free-swimming juveniles are diurnal planktivores, venturing out from the safety of the parental burrow to feed on suspended zooplankton, copepods, micro-crustaceans, and tiny organic matter carried by gentle reef currents. In a fascinating biological twist, research has demonstrated that juvenile convictfish also regurgitate food to feed the homebound adults, or adults may feed upon the mucus and secretions of the dense juvenile swarms within the tunnels. Mature adults rarely, if ever, leave their burrow networks to forage on the open reef; their diet underground is supplemented by benthic invertebrates, interstitial worms, micro-crustaceans, and detritus disturbed during their relentless tunnel excavation.
