Its body comprises a nearly circular, flattened pectoral disc that is smooth-skinned and entirely devoid of dermal denticles or thorns along the central midline. The dorsal surface features a rich light-brown to reddish-ochre coloration adorned with a distinctive arrangement of five vivid, sky-blue spots rimmed by dark-brown borders—an unmistakable marking that gives this species its alternate common name. Posterior to the round disc lies a stocky, muscular tail supporting two rounded dorsal fins set close together, terminating in a well-developed, paddle-shaped caudal fin. A pair of kidney-shaped electric organs, derived from modified branchial muscle tissue, occupies each side of the head, capable of generating an electric discharge used for both defence and predation. When diving in areas frequented by the common torpedo ray, maintaining neutral buoyancy is critical to avoid accidentally kicking or settling onto a buried animal. Scan sandy patches and seagrass margins carefully for the telltale outline of its disc or the raised spiracles. Always maintain a respectful distance of at least one to two metres; never attempt to touch, prod, or corner the ray, as an accidental discharge of up to 40 to 50 volts can cause a painful and disorienting shock through a wetsuit. For underwater photographers, approach low and slowly without making sudden movements. Use a wide-angle or medium-range lens and rely on diffused dual strobes or continuous video lights to illuminate the electric blue ocelli without washing out the fine texture of the surrounding sand. In the eastern Atlantic along the coast of Portugal and southwest Spain, June to September offers the best visibility and calmest sea states for exploring sandy shelf drop-offs. Habitat

The common torpedo ray is a bottom-dwelling species inhabiting shallow coastal inshore waters to moderate depths along the continental shelf, ranging from the intertidal zone down to roughly 400 metres, though it is most frequently observed between 2 and 70 metres. It displays a strong preference for soft sediments, including fine sand, muddy bottoms, and mixed gravel, often residing near the edges of seagrass (*Posidonia oceanica*) meadows, macroalgal beds, and rocky reefs. The waters this animal calls home span the Mediterranean Sea, where it is widely distributed, into the Black Sea, and along the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Biscay southwards past the Canary Islands, Madeira, and western Africa down to Angola.

Diet

The common torpedo ray is a specialised, nocturnal carnivore with a hunting strategy that relies heavily on electrical discharge. Its primary prey consists of small-to-medium benthic bony fishes, including gobies, mullets, damselfish, and small flatfishes, along with a variety of benthic invertebrates such as octopuses, cuttlefish, and swimming crabs. Hunting predominantly after dusk, the ray lies in wait beneath the sediment or cruises slowly along the bottom until sensory ampullae and vision detect moving prey. When within striking distance, the ray lunges upward, wraps its flexible pectoral disc around the target to trap it against the substrate, and delivers a disorienting, high-voltage electric shock from its specialised electric organs. Once the prey is completely stunned or killed, the ray manoeuvres the meal towards its ventral mouth and swallows it whole.
