
Porpoises are small, highly streamlined cetaceans belonging to the family Phocoenidae, comprising seven extant species worldwide. Readily distinguished from oceanic dolphins, porpoises possess compact, robust bodies, rounded heads lacking an elongated beak or rostrum, and characteristic spade-shaped (spatulate) teeth rather than conical dentition. Their dorsal fins, where present, are small, triangular, and centrally placed, though some taxa such as the finless porpoise (Neophocaena) lack a dorsal fin entirely. Most species exhibit subtle, countershaded colouration, ranging from slate grey or dark brownish-black along the dorsal surface to creamy white on the ventral underside, providing effective camouflage in temperate and subpolar waters. Measuring between 1.4 and 2.3 metres in length, they are among the smallest marine mammals on Earth, built for rapid acceleration and agile navigation through coastal and shelf environments. Ecologically, porpoises occupy a crucial mid-trophic niche in cool-temperate, subarctic, and coastal waters across the globe. Unlike many gregarious dolphin species, porpoises are typically shy, cryptic, and found individually, in mother-calf pairs, or in small pods of two to eight individuals. They employ high-frequency narrow-band (HFNB) echolocation clicks well above the hearing range of apex predators such as transient killer whales, enabling them to navigate murky estuaries, coastal channels, and fjords without revealing their presence. Highly adapted to dynamic littoral environments, harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli) inhabit shelf breaks, tidal rapids, and coastal sounds where fierce currents concentrate schooling pelagic fish and cephalopods. Porpoises, typically observed in small groups of two to ten individuals, are generally shy and less acrobatic than dolphins, often avoiding boats. Their activity patterns include foraging, resting, and socialising, though precise diurnal or nocturnal distinctions can vary. Phocoenidae species, such as Phocoena phocoena, are viviparous, giving birth to live young. Reproduction usually occurs seasonally, with mating often taking place in summer and autumn, leading to births in late spring or early summer of the following year. After a gestation period of approximately ten to eleven months, females typically produce a single calf. This calf is dependent on its mother for nursing and protection for several months, often up to a year, before gradually becoming independent. Sexual maturity is usually reached between three and five years of age for both males and females. For divers and snorkelers, an underwater encounter with a wild porpoise is an extraordinary privilege due to their exceptionally cautious temperament. While bow-riding is rare—with the notable exception of the energetic Dall's porpoise—these elusive cetaceans will occasionally investigate motionless divers in clear water. A close approach reveals their sleek hydrodynamic efficiency, delicate breathing rhythm at the surface, and intense, inquisitive gaze. Because coastal populations are sensitive bioindicators vulnerable to gillnet bycatch, acoustic disturbance, and pollution, witnessing these diminutive cetaceans thriving in their natural habitat is an unforgettable reminder of the vital importance of protecting fragile coastal ecosystems.
