Few sights in diving are as exhilarating as being enveloped by a swirling vortex of silver fish. This is the world of the jacks and trevallies, collectively known as 'jackfish'. Belonging to the family Carangidae, and particularly the genus Caranx and its close relatives, these are the wolves of the reef: powerful, intelligent, and built for speed. Their classic fish-shape is a masterclass in hydrodynamic design, featuring a sleek, laterally compressed body, a deeply forked tail for powerful propulsion, and large eyes for spotting prey in all conditions. A defining feature is the row of sharp, bony scales known as scutes located along the lateral line just before the tail, providing stability and a sharp defence. Divers will encounter several key species. The undisputed king is the giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis), a brutish, powerful predator that can reach up to 80 kg and often patrols the reef alone or in small gangs as a mature adult. Its smaller, schooling cousin, the bigeye jack (Caranx sexfasciatus), is famous for forming the mesmerising 'tornadoes' of fish seen at sites like Cabo Pulmo or Cocos Island. The bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus) adds a splash of incredible colour, with electric blue fins and speckles over a brassy-gold body. In the Atlantic, divers will meet the horse-eye jack (Caranx latus), with its namesake large eye and often yellowish tail, while the enigmatic black jack (Caranx lugubris) is a darker, deeper-bodied fish often found in smaller groups on deeper oceanic drop-offs. The schooling behaviour of jacks is legendary. While larger individuals like giant trevally become more solitary, many species, especially as sub-adults, form vast aggregations numbering in the hundreds or thousands. This is primarily a defensive strategy, confusing predators and making it difficult to single out an individual. For bigeye jacks, this behaviour elevates into a true natural wonder: the 'jacknado'. The school coalesces into a vast, swirling vortex of fish, a constantly moving column that can be breathtaking to witness from within. This is not just for defence; it is also thought to be a form of communication and a hydrodynamic aid during rest periods in high-current areas. Jacks are highly effective mesopredators, playing a crucial role in a healthy reef ecosystem by controlling populations of smaller fish. Most are pursuit predators, using blistering speed to run down prey in open water. They are often most active during the low-light hours of dawn and dusk, using the dim conditions to their advantage. Some species have developed remarkable cooperative hunting strategies, working together to herd schools of baitfish against the reef wall before striking. The giant trevally is famously opportunistic and has even been observed launching itself from the water to snatch fledgling seabirds from the surface, a testament to its power and intelligence. Reproduction for many jack species is a spectacular, large-scale event. They are broadcast spawners, gathering in huge aggregations at specific times of the year, often cued by lunar cycles and water temperature. At sites like Fakarava Atoll in French Polynesia, thousands of jacks congregate in channels on the outgoing tide to release their eggs and sperm into the open ocean. The resulting larvae are pelagic, drifting in the ocean currents for weeks or months before settling. Juveniles typically seek refuge in the calm, protected waters of mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and estuaries, graduating to the main reef and its high-energy currents as they grow larger and stronger.

Diving Tips

Approaching a school of jacks requires a calm and patient approach. Never swim directly into or chase the school, as this will cause them to bolt. The best strategy is to approach slowly from the side, control your breathing to minimise bubbles and noise, and maintain a non-threatening posture. Often, if you remain still, the school's natural curiosity will cause them to swim around you, providing an unforgettable experience. Excellent buoyancy control is essential to avoid startling the fish and to remain safely off the delicate reef. To maximise your chances of a great encounter, position yourself in areas of high current, such as the corner of a reef or the mouth of a channel, especially on a running tide. Using a reef hook (where permitted and appropriate) can help you hold your position effortlessly and observe the fish as they hunt in the current. For photographers, a wide-angle lens is a must to capture the immense scale of a schooling event. For the classic 'tornado' shot, try to position yourself underneath the school and shoot upwards towards the surface light, using a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion.

Best Season

In many world-class diving destinations, jacks are resident species and can be reliably seen year-round. Their presence is more dependent on location and daily conditions—specifically, current—than on a particular season. Dive sites known for strong currents are almost always the best place to look for them, regardless of the time of year. However, for the most spectacular encounters, timing your trip to coincide with known spawning aggregations can be incredibly rewarding. These events are predictable but highly localised, occurring at specific sites, at certain times of the year, and are often linked to a particular phase of the moon (typically around the new or full moon). These aggregations attract thousands of fish and are a true natural wonder. Daily activity is heavily influenced by tides, with incoming or outgoing tides in reef channels often triggering intense hunting behaviour.

Habitat

Jacks are a circumtropical group, found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic, and Eastern Pacific oceans. The Indo-Pacific is a particular hotspot for diversity, home to the giant trevally, bigeye jack, and bluefin trevally. The Atlantic Ocean hosts major populations of horse-eye and crevalle jacks, which fill similar ecological niches. As adults, they are most commonly encountered by divers in high-energy environments like outer reef walls, steep drop-offs, channels, and oceanic seamounts where currents are consistently strong. These currents concentrate their prey and provide ideal conditions for hunting. Juvenile jacks, however, lead a very different life, seeking shelter and food in shallow, protected inshore habitats such as estuaries, mangrove forests, and sandy bays. Divers typically encounter adult jacks from the surface down to around 50 metres, though some species like the black jack are found in deeper water, well below 100 metres.

Diet

Jacks are voracious, opportunistic carnivores with a diet consisting primarily of other fish. They are not particularly fussy eaters and will also prey on a variety of crustaceans like shrimps and crabs, as well as cephalopods such as squid and octopus, especially when they are abundant. Their hunting strategies are varied and effective. The most common method is high-speed pursuit in open water, simply running down their prey. However, they are also known to use ambush tactics, using the reef structure for cover. Many species exhibit sophisticated cooperative hunting, with groups working together to corner and ball up schools of baitfish against the reef face, allowing each member to strike. They are often crepuscular, meaning their hunting activity peaks at dawn and dusk, using the low light to gain an advantage over their prey.
