Encountering an Antarctic Minke Whale while diving is a rare and incredible privilege, demanding utmost respect and adherence to strict guidelines. Never pursue, chase, or attempt to initiate contact with a whale. If a minke whale approaches a dive group, divers should remain calm, move slowly, and avoid sudden movements that could be perceived as threatening. Maintain a respectful distance, generally a minimum of 100 meters (330 feet), though whales sometimes choose to approach closer. If approached, stay vertical and observe quietly. Never obstruct their path or swim in front of them. Do not touch, feed, or attempt to interact physically with the whale in any way; this is not only illegal in most regions but also poses a risk to both diver and animal. Pay attention to the whale's behavior; if it shows signs of agitation, such as rapid changes in direction or tail slapping, slowly and calmly retreat. Spotting cues include their relatively small, hooked dorsal fin and distinct, often quick and shallow blows. They can be quite curious animals.
