Diet

Painted tunicates are non-selective, suspension filter feeders that draw nutrient-rich seawater through their bodies continuously. Each individual zooid pumps water inward via its incurrent branchial siphon using the rhythmic beating of microscopic cilia that line the pharyngeal basket. Inside, a sticky mucus net produced by a specialised groove called the endostyle captures suspended organic material, including phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, dinoflagellates, and fine particulate organic matter (marine snow).
