
Sea anemones are soft-bodied marine invertebrates belonging to the order Actiniaria within the class Anthozoa and phylum Cnidaria. Named after the terrestrial flowering plant due to their vibrant, flower-like appearance, these predatory animals are closely related to corals and jellyfish. Unlike true jellyfish, sea anemones completely lack a medusa phase, remaining polyps throughout their life cycle. Across the global oceans, over 1,200 species have been classified, ranging from minute individuals measuring just a few millimetres to giant specimens reaching up to 1.5 metres in diameter. The classic sea anemone anatomical structure consists of a cylindrical column topped by a flat oral disc. At the centre of this disc lies a single opening that serves as both mouth and anus, surrounded by concentric rings of flexible tentacles. Most species attach firmly to rocks or coral reefs using a sticky basal or pedal disc. Others burrow into soft sand using a bulbous base called a physa, whilst a select few can slide, float, or even swim by flexing their bodies and tentacles. Sea anemones are famous among divers for their intricate micro-ecosystems and mutualistic partnerships. Many tropical species house single-celled photosynthetic algae, such as zooxanthellae or zoochlorellae, within their cells. These algae receive shelter and nutrients while supplying the host anemone with oxygen and carbohydrates. Furthermore, anemones frequently host clownfish (Amphiprion species) and specialized cleaner shrimp. Protected by specialized mucous coatings, these symbionts shelter among the stinging tentacles, defending the host from predators and supplying vital nutrients through waste. Underneath their delicate appearance lies a formidable predatory mechanism. Anemone tentacles are lined with specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes, which contain capsule-like organelles known as nematocysts. When a microscopic sensory hair on the cell is touched, it triggers an explosive reaction that launches a barbed harpoon structure into the target, injecting potent neurotoxins and actinotoxins. While most anemones are completely harmless to human skin, highly toxic species such as the hell's-fire anemone (Actinodendron arboreum) can inflict severe, potentially dangerous injuries on divers. Sea anemones reproduce through both sexual and asexual methods. During sexual reproduction, polyps release eggs and sperm through their central mouth directly into the water column. The resulting fertilised eggs mature into free-swimming planula larvae before settling onto suitable substrate to transform into juvenile polyps. Asexually, anemones can split in half or regenerate fully functional polyps from tiny fragmented pieces of their body, contributing to their impressive long-term resilience on marine substrate.
