Micronesia spans 2,000+ islands across the western Pacific. For liveaboards, three regions dominate: Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon — the world's greatest concentration of WWII shipwrecks; Palau — UNESCO-listed reefs, Blue Corner and Jellyfish Lake; and Yap — guaranteed manta encounters in the famous Mil Channel. Liveaboards focus on Chuuk and Palau separately.
Diving is good year-round. Chuuk Lagoon: visibility peaks December–April (20–25 m), with little swell. Palau: best November–April (calm seas, 25–30 m). Manta season at Yap is December–April. Water temperatures stay 28–30 °C across the region.
Chuuk International Airport (TKK) and Roman Tmetuchl International (ROR, Palau) are the main hubs. Connections via Guam (United Airlines), Manila and Tokyo. Yap (YAP) is reached via Guam.
Liveaboards embark in Weno (Chuuk) for Truk Lagoon trips and in Koror (Palau) for Rock Islands itineraries. Yap is mostly land-based, with occasional combined Yap–Palau crossings.
Truk Lagoon hosts 60+ WWII Japanese wrecks at depths from 12 to 60 m, including the Fujikawa Maru, Shinkoku Maru, San Francisco Maru and the I-169 submarine. Palau's Blue Corner is a current-driven shark hotspot; German Channel offers manta cleaning stations and the Ulong Channel a thrilling drift. Peleliu Express delivers strong currents and pelagics.
Bring a 3 mm wetsuit, a reef hook (mandatory in Palau), a torch with backup for wreck penetration, and SMB. Tec-recreational training is recommended for the deeper Truk wrecks. English is widely spoken.
Currency is the US dollar throughout Micronesia. Power is 110 V/60 Hz (US plugs). Time zones differ: Chuuk UTC+10, Palau UTC+9, Yap UTC+10. Tipping is appreciated.
Truk wreck penetration is technically demanding — appropriate training and torches are essential. Palau enforces a $100 Reef & Rock Islands fee plus eco departure tax. Strong currents at Blue Corner require reef hooks. Hyperbaric chambers exist on Palau and Chuuk; comprehensive dive insurance is recommended.
