Cayman Islands diving travel guide — what to expect on a liveaboard trip

Cayman Islands Liveaboard Diving

Crystal Caribbean walls, friendly stingrays and three islands of pristine reefs.

The Cayman Islands — Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman — sit on the deep Cayman Trench in the central Caribbean. Liveaboards focus on the remote Sister Islands, where the legendary Bloody Bay Wall and Jackson's Bight deliver some of the most spectacular vertical reef diving in the Western Hemisphere. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres.

When to Go

Diving is excellent year-round. The dry season (December–April) brings the calmest seas and 30+ m visibility. Summer (May–September) is warmer (28–29 °C) but slightly more humid. Hurricane season runs June–November; September–October is statistically the highest risk.

How to Get There

Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) on Grand Cayman is the main hub, with direct flights from Miami, New York, Atlanta, Houston, Tampa, Toronto and London. Cayman Airways operates short hops to Cayman Brac (CYB) and Little Cayman (LYB).

Ports of Departure

Most Sister-Islands liveaboards embark in Grand Cayman (George Town) and cruise overnight to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. A few vessels are based on Little Cayman.

Dive Sites & Areas

Bloody Bay Wall (Little Cayman) plunges from 6 m to 1,800 m and is the headline attraction. Jackson's Bight features dramatic swim-throughs. The MV Captain Keith Tibbetts off Cayman Brac is a 100 m Russian frigate wreck at 16–25 m. Stingray City in Grand Cayman is one of the world's most famous shallow encounters.

Travel Tips

Bring a 3 mm wetsuit, a torch for swim-throughs and an underwater camera. English is the official language. Tipping (15 %) is expected at restaurants but optional on dive boats.

Good to Know

Currency is the Cayman Islands dollar (KYD), pegged at 1 KYD = 1.20 USD. USD is accepted everywhere. Power is 120 V/60 Hz (US plugs). Cayman is on UTC−5 and does not observe daylight saving.

Considerations

Walls drop into thousands of metres — strict depth discipline is essential. Hurricane season can affect availability between June and November. The chamber is on Grand Cayman.
