Home of the Great Blue Hole and the second-longest barrier reef on Earth.
Belize sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the largest in the Western Hemisphere — and is home to three of only four atolls in the Caribbean. Liveaboards reach the remote outer atolls of Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe and Glover's Reef, including the iconic Great Blue Hole, an experience day boats from the mainland struggle to deliver.
Year-round diving is excellent. April–June offers the calmest seas and best visibility (25–30 m), with whale shark aggregations at Gladden Spit (full moons in March–June). November–February brings cooler water (25–26 °C) and occasional cold fronts. Hurricane season is June–November.
Most international visitors fly into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City, with direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Newark and Toronto. From BZE, transfers to liveaboard piers in Belize City take 15–30 minutes.
Belize City is the main embarkation port for most liveaboards. A few smaller vessels depart from Placencia or San Pedro for southern atoll itineraries.
The Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef is a 124 m sinkhole with stalactites at 40 m and reef sharks circling. Half Moon Caye Wall is one of the Caribbean's premier wall dives. Turneffe Atoll's Elbow attracts pelagics and reef sharks. Glover's Reef offers pristine coral and macro photography. Gladden Spit hosts whale sharks during snapper spawning.
Bring a 3 mm wetsuit (5 mm in winter), a torch for the Blue Hole and a camera with wide angle and macro options. English is the official language — Belize is a former British colony.
Currency is the Belize dollar (pegged 2:1 to USD; both accepted). Power is 110 V/60 Hz (US plugs). Belize uses UTC−6. Tap water on land is generally not potable; bottled is standard.
The Blue Hole is a deep dive (40 m) with limited bottom time — only certified divers with appropriate experience should attempt it. Hurricane season can disrupt itineraries from June–November. The chamber is in San Pedro; remote evacuation insurance is recommended.
