PADI vs SSI: Which Dive Certification Should You Choose?

Both PADI and SSI certify divers worldwide and are accepted on every reputable liveaboard. The real differences come down to cost, learning style and which dive shop is closest to you — not the quality of training.

The short answer

For most new divers, the agency matters far less than the instructor. Both PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and SSI (Scuba Schools International) are members of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council, share the same minimum training standards (RSTC / ISO 24801), and are accepted by every liveaboard operator worldwide.

Pick PADI if you want the largest global network and the most recognised brand on a CV. Pick SSI if you want lower course fees and free digital learning materials.

Recognition on liveaboards

We have never seen a liveaboard refuse a valid SSI card — or a PADI card. Cruise directors check certification level (Open Water, Advanced, Rescue) and recent logged dives, not the agency logo. The same applies for Nitrox, Deep and specialty cards.

Cost comparison (Open Water)

• PADI Open Water: $400–$650 depending on country. Materials cost $80–$120 extra.

• SSI Open Water: $300–$550 typically. Digital materials are free when you book the course.

Resort destinations like Koh Tao, Utila and Dahab undercut these prices significantly — expect $250–$350 for either agency.

Course structure

PADI uses a fixed five-module structure with mandatory knowledge reviews. SSI is more flexible and lets the instructor adapt order and pace, which suits adult learners. Pool sessions and open water dives (4 minimum) are identical in scope.

Crossing over between agencies

You never need to "convert" a card. A PADI Open Water Diver can take an SSI Advanced course (and vice versa). Replacement cards cost $30–$45 from either agency and arrive digitally within 24 hours.

Other agencies worth knowing

NAUI, SDI and CMAS are also fully recognised on liveaboards. BSAC is dominant in the UK and trains divers to a notably higher rescue standard. Tech-focused divers usually go with TDI, IANTD or GUE for advanced training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do liveaboards prefer PADI over SSI?

No. Every reputable liveaboard accepts both equally, along with NAUI, SDI, CMAS and BSAC. The cruise director only checks your certification level and recent logged dives.

Which is cheaper, PADI or SSI?

SSI is typically $50–$150 cheaper for Open Water because digital materials are included free. The actual price difference depends much more on your dive shop and country than on the agency.

Can I switch agencies after Open Water?

Yes — there is no conversion needed. Take your next course with whichever agency you prefer; both will accept the other's prerequisite certification.

Is PADI better recognised internationally?

PADI has more dive shops globally (around 6,600 vs SSI's 3,500), so finding a course is easier. For diving on a liveaboard, recognition is identical.
