The zander is a large freshwater predator belonging to the perch family, Percidae. Native to parts of Europe and western Asia, including the Danube basin, it has also been introduced widely elsewhere. In the Saône, it is an introduced but established species. Its streamlined body, sharp teeth and excellent vision in dim light make it an effective hunter in large rivers and lakes. Despite sometimes being called a pike-perch, it is not a hybrid between a pike and a perch.
