The common carp is a large freshwater fish with a long history of cultivation and introduction around the world. The Danube basin forms part of its native range, while populations in the Douro basin are introduced. Domesticated forms and their descendants occur widely, sometimes mixing with native wild populations. Although carp are abundant in many waters, the conservation status of native wild stocks is affected by habitat change and interbreeding with domesticated fish. Their ability to thrive in warm, productive waters has made them important in both freshwater ecosystems and aquaculture.
