The Iberian barbel is a freshwater fish native to the Iberian Peninsula, including the Douro basin in Portugal and Spain. It belongs to the carp family, Cyprinidae, and is well adapted to feeding close to the riverbed. Its streamlined body, fleshy lips and four barbels help it find food in flowing water. Although it remains widespread, individual populations are affected by barriers to migration, habitat alteration and deteriorating water quality.
