The dice snake is a non-venomous, strongly aquatic snake found across parts of Europe and Asia. It occurs along suitable stretches of the Danube and in connected wetlands. Its name refers to the dark, roughly square markings that often form a chequered pattern along its back. An accomplished swimmer, it feeds mainly on fish and depends on waterside habitats for hunting, shelter and breeding. Although globally assessed as Least Concern, local populations can be affected by river engineering, wetland loss and persecution.
