The European pond turtle is a freshwater turtle native to parts of Europe, western Asia and North Africa. In the Danube basin, it is associated particularly with floodplain wetlands and quieter waters connected to the river system. Its dark shell and skin are typically patterned with small yellow spots or streaks. Wetland drainage, habitat fragmentation, road mortality and introduced turtles threaten many populations. Protecting both aquatic habitats and nearby nesting ground is important for its conservation.
