The grass snake is a non-venomous snake found across much of Europe and into Asia. It occurs along the Danube, where floodplain wetlands provide feeding areas and shelter. Although closely associated with water, it also spends considerable time on land. Amphibians form the main part of its diet, linking its fortunes to healthy wetland habitats. It is harmless to people and normally retreats when disturbed.
