Meilleure période pour plonger : le guide mois par mois

Dive seasons decide almost everything on a liveaboard: visibility, water temperature, currents and which big animals show up. This month-by-month chart shows the best time to dive each destination at a glance, Red Sea shark season in Egypt, Maldives manta and whale shark months, Raja Ampat's dry season, Komodo's calm window, Socorro's giant mantas and Galápagos hammerhead peaks. Green means peak conditions, amber shoulder season, red the months most boats avoid.

Derived from the published season windows of each destination, indicative, not a live measurement.

Comment choisir une croisière : bateau, itinéraire et niveau

Most guests decide in the same order: first the month, then the budget, then the animal they want to see. The boat comes last, and is still what the week is remembered for. Anyone with two weeks in the northern winter almost inevitably ends up in the southern hemisphere; anyone with one week of leave and a need for a direct flight stays in the Red Sea.

For a first liveaboard, look for calm reefs, short crossings and dives without heavy current: Thailand, the northern routes in Egypt and large parts of the Maldives. If you want current and big animals, plan for Galápagos, Socorro or the Brothers routes in Egypt, there, proof of 50 to 100 logged dives is the rule rather than the exception.

Price differences come less from the boat than from the distance. A Red Sea week starts around €792 on board plus roughly €334 in flights and €352 in extras. The same week in Indonesia starts near €1,407 on board, with €967 to €1,231 in flights and two travel days at each end. The calculator above adds those layers up for every destination.

Safety standards are part of every serious booking decision since the Red Sea incidents of the 2023/24 season. Look for a visible safety briefing before the first dive, emergency oxygen, a second compressor, a crew with current rescue certification and proof of dive accident insurance as a booking condition. A good vessel names those points unprompted, if the operator page is silent, ask.

Shoulder season pays off when the price advantage outweighs the loss in visibility and the odds of seeing your target species, 20 to 30% cheaper is realistic, but the hammerhead schools at Daedalus only show from May to July, not in December. When in doubt, the season overview above decides, not the price alone.

FAQ croisière-plongée

Which liveaboard destination is best for a first trip?
Egypt's northern Red Sea routes, Thailand's Similan Islands and large parts of the Maldives combine calm reefs, short crossings and dives without heavy current. They are also the three most affordable regions, so a first week on board rarely goes beyond a mid-range budget.
How much does a liveaboard week really cost?
The cabin price is only part of it. Budget the on-board rate, return flights, port and marine-park fees, nitrox if it is not included, and the customary crew tip. The calculator on this page adds all five for every destination so you see a realistic total, not just the headline rate.
When is the cheapest time to book?
Shoulder season is typically 20-30% cheaper than peak weeks, and early-bird rates released 9-12 months ahead often beat last-minute deals. The trade-off is visibility and the odds of seeing the species you came for, check the season overview before you chase a discount.
Do I need a minimum number of logged dives?
For current-heavy routes such as Galápagos, the Egyptian Brothers/Daedalus/Elphinstone loop, Komodo's southern sites or Socorro, operators normally require 50-100 logged dives and often a nitrox certification. Reef-focused itineraries accept open-water divers with a handful of dives.
How far in advance should I book?
Peak weeks on the most requested boats, Raja Ampat in December, Galápagos in August, Egypt over Christmas, are frequently sold out 9-14 months ahead. Outside those windows, three to six months is usually enough.
Is diving insurance mandatory?
Practically every operator requires proof of dive accident insurance before boarding, and several ask for it at the time of booking. Standard travel insurance rarely covers recompression chamber treatment, so a dedicated dive policy is the safer choice.
Which safety standards should I look for on board?
A visible safety briefing before the first dive, emergency oxygen, a second compressor, a crew with current rescue certification, life rafts sized for the full manifest, and proof of dive accident insurance as a booking condition. A good vessel lists these unprompted.
What is the difference between a country and an area?
A country page collects every route and vessel sailing under that flag. Areas such as Raja Ampat, Komodo, the Banda Sea or the Brothers Islands are the individual cruising grounds within a country, each with its own season and dive profile.
Can I dive on nitrox on every liveaboard?
Most modern liveaboards offer nitrox, but it is included in the fare on only some of them. In the Red Sea and Indonesia it is usually a paid extra of roughly €106–€150 per week; in the Caribbean and on luxury vessels it is more often part of the package.
How many dives per day can I expect?
Three to four guided dives per day is the norm, with a night dive on most itineraries. Expedition routes with long crossings, Banda Sea, Antarctica, remote Pacific, usually run two to three, because sailing time replaces bottom time.
