The Green Sandpiper is a small migratory wader with dark upperparts, a bright white rump and a preference for freshwater margins. It breeds across northern Europe and Asia and spends the non-breeding season farther south, including in Africa. Along the Nile, it occurs as a passage migrant and winter visitor rather than a breeding resident. Quiet muddy edges, drainage channels and shallow pools offer more suitable conditions than the deep, open river. Its English name refers to the subtle greenish cast of its upperparts, which usually look dark brown in the field.

These birds are recorded along the Egyptian Nile near Esna, Edfu and Aswan. The classic Luxor–Aswan river corridor is separate from Lake Nasser; Nile crocodiles are not advertised for this cruise stretch.
