The White Wagtail is a slender, long-tailed songbird known for its brisk walk and frequent tail movements. Its black, white and grey plumage makes it distinctive on open ground. The species breeds across much of Europe and Asia, with populations also occurring in northwestern Africa and western Alaska. It is a familiar bird around waterways, farmland and settlements, often using human-made structures alongside natural habitats. Along the Douro it can occur throughout the year, while along the Nile it is principally a winter visitor and passage migrant.
