The white-tailed deer is a widespread American hoofed mammal named for the bright white underside of its tail. It occurs throughout the Mississippi River basin, from northern forests to southern floodplains. Its adaptability allows it to live in woodlands, agricultural landscapes, and some suburban areas. As both a plant eater and prey animal, it plays an important role in riverine ecosystems. Where deer become especially abundant, heavy browsing can reduce woodland regeneration.

These species are documented along the Upper Mississippi corridor. An upper-river record does not promise presence on a Lower Mississippi sailing.
