The American mink is a semiaquatic member of the weasel family native to much of North America. It occurs along both the Columbia and Mississippi river systems, where sheltered banks and wetlands provide food and cover. Its streamlined body, dense fur, and swimming ability suit a life spent hunting between land and water. Although globally widespread, mink depend on healthy waterside habitats and can be affected by wetland loss and contaminants that accumulate in their prey. Introduced populations outside North America can threaten native wildlife.
