The Purple Heron is a slender, secretive waterbird found across parts of Europe, Africa and Asia. Its rich chestnut neck and dark, purplish-grey plumage distinguish it from the more familiar Grey Heron. It is closely associated with reedbeds and other densely vegetated wetlands rather than exposed riverbanks. Suitable habitats occur in the Danube, Nile and Mekong basins, although its presence and abundance vary locally. Despite its global Least Concern status, wetland drainage and disturbance can threaten local populations.
