The pumpkinseed is a small, colourful freshwater fish belonging to the sunfish family, Centrarchidae. Native to eastern North America, it has been introduced widely across Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula. In the Douro basin, it is a non-native species associated particularly with sheltered margins and slow-moving waters. Its attractive appearance contrasts with its ecological impact, as introduced populations can compete with native fishes and consume aquatic invertebrates, fish eggs and young fish.
