Tajma-Ha, often called "Taj Mahal" by local cave divers and named for the Mayan word "ha" meaning "water," is a renowned cenote system located approximately 5 km south of Puerto Aventuras, off Highway 307 which connects Tulum and Playa del Carmen. It is a complex of at least three interconnected underground cenotes: Tajma Ha, Sugar Bowl, and Esmerelda, offering a unique freshwater diving experience distinct from ocean diving. This site is celebrated for its intricate geological formations, including vast chambers, narrow passages, and delicate stalactites that grow incredibly slowly, making their preservation paramount. The dive unfolds through a maze of tunnels and cavern environments. Divers enter a series of immense rooms, transitioning through cloistered tunnels that often give the impression of exploring a grand cathedral. The topography features stunning limestone formations that appear whipped like meringue, with rocks that can glow when illuminated, ancient fossils embedded in the walls, and visible rubble on the bottom from collapsed sections. The average depth throughout the cavern is quite shallow, typically around 50 feet (15 meters). While marine life is not the primary focus, the cenote boasts crystal-clear freshwater visibility, sometimes up to 300 feet (91 meters), though this can be compromised by silt disturbed by divers. The unique environment includes a distinct halocline where a layer of saltwater rests beneath the freshwater, creating mesmerizing visual effects as the different densities mix. Occasional sightings of animals like MotMots or Clock birds have been reported near the entry. Diving here typically involves multiple dives, often two tanks in two different cavern lines. It is generally recommended for advanced divers, particularly for navigating deeper into the tunnels, though the entrance portion may be accessible to certified open water divers. Careful buoyancy control is essential to avoid disturbing the fragile environment and bottom silt.
