The clam draws water through its siphons and across its gills, capturing suspended food items in a layer of sticky mucus before transporting them to its mouth. Its primary diet consists of tiny planktonic organisms and suspended particulate matter. Main prey items include copepods, crustacean nauplii, tintinnid ciliates, and larvaceans. It also consumes phytoplankton such as diatoms and dinoflagellates. By filtering these microscopic organisms out of the water column, the electric clam plays a vital ecological role in reef nutrient cycling, benthic-pelagic coupling, and localized water clarification within its crevice microhabitat.
