The sterlet is one of the smallest sturgeons and a native fish of the Danube basin. Unlike the large sea-migrating sturgeons, it normally spends its entire life in freshwater. Its slender body, pointed snout and rows of bony plates give it a distinctive appearance. Once more widespread, it has declined through overfishing, river regulation, barriers to movement and habitat degradation. Protecting connected river habitats and suitable spawning grounds is essential to its recovery.
