The Mekong giant catfish is one of the world's largest freshwater fishes and is native to the Mekong basin. This exceptionally large, scaleless fish belongs to the shark catfish family, Pangasiidae. It has become extremely rare following severe population declines. Overfishing, river fragmentation and changes to natural river flows threaten its survival. Its conservation depends on protecting connected river habitats and cooperation across the Mekong countries.

Dolphins inhabit northern Cambodian pools towards Laos, outside typical Vietnam-delta sailings. Otters and lesser adjutants are recorded at Prek Toal on Tonlé Sap, requiring a separate lake/wetland excursion. Neither northern pools nor the reserve is automatically included on a Mekong cruise.
