The giant snakehead is a large freshwater predator native to Southeast Asia, including the Mekong basin. It is among the largest members of the snakehead family, Channidae. Its elongated body, powerful jaws and ability to breathe air make it well suited to warm tropical waters. Young fish are strikingly red or orange, while adults become much darker. The species is caught for food and also raised in aquaculture across parts of its native range.

Dolphins inhabit northern Cambodian pools towards Laos, outside typical Vietnam-delta sailings. Otters and lesser adjutants are recorded at Prek Toal on Tonlé Sap, requiring a separate lake/wetland excursion. Neither northern pools nor the reserve is automatically included on a Mekong cruise.
