The hoatzin is a distinctive leaf-eating bird of tropical South America, including the Amazon Basin. Its spiky crest, bare blue face and reddish eyes give it an unmistakable appearance. It is the only living member of the family Opisthocomidae, and its evolutionary relationship to other birds remains debated. Unusually for a bird, it relies on microbial fermentation in an enlarged foregut to help digest its leafy food.

These wetland birds are recorded on Peruvian Amazon river excursions. Flooded forests, lagoons and tributaries offer different habitats; routes and water levels affect access.
