Cenote Siete Bocas, meaning "Seven Mouths," is a unique cavern dive site nestled along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos in Mexico's Riviera Maya. Its name perfectly describes the seven natural openings in the ceiling, which allow magnificent shafts of sunlight to penetrate the immense underground chamber. This site offers a distinct experience compared to cenotes with long, winding passages, focusing instead on a vast, open space illuminated by these dramatic light beams and adorned with ancient limestone formations. The dive commences by entering through one of the seven openings, leading divers into a sprawling limestone dome. The ceiling is rich with stalactites, formed over millennia when the cavern was dry. As divers explore, the light show from the various angles constantly shifts, creating a dynamic and spectacular atmosphere. In deeper sections, certified divers might encounter a hydrogen sulfide cloud, alongside marine fossils embedded within the limestone walls, offering a glimpse into the region's ancient geological past. The water temperature consistently hovers around 24 to 25°C, providing a comfortable diving experience. Visibility is excellent, often exceeding 30 meters when undisturbed, ensuring clear views of the cavern's grandeur. Dives typically last between 45 to 60 minutes, guiding divers through the cavern route within the natural daylight zone. The site is generally less crowded than some of the more popular cenotes, offering a more authentic and wild ambiance. While accessible to Open Water divers under the right guidance, an Advanced Open Water certification with good buoyancy control is recommended for the recreational cavern route, which typically reaches a maximum depth of 15 meters. Experienced and qualified divers may explore deeper profiles, potentially reaching around 30 meters, where the hydrogen sulfide cloud can be observed. Dive profiles are tailored to diver certification and experience, with an emphasis on preserving visibility through careful movement.
