Sandra's Grotto, also referred to as Texas, Rino Phores, or Salt Life Point, is located at the westernmost tip of Roatan, in the Bay Islands of Honduras. This site highlights the distinct characteristics of the island's southern diving locations, differing from those further west. Its position allows for nutrient-rich currents flowing east to west, fostering extensive marine life and making it a prominent spot along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef globally. The topography features a reef that begins in shallow waters, between 6 and 9 meters, and descends steeply to a depth of 36 meters before continuing deeper. Divers can explore a vibrant reef wall between 6 and 9 meters. Further offshore, at depths of 12 to 15 meters, the area known as Texas transitions to a sandy seafloor dotted with scattered corals, giving it a somewhat desert-like appearance. Thanks to the nutrient flow, the site is home to massive sea fans and giant barrel sponges. Divers frequently encounter schools of cubera snapper, horse-eye jacks, and barracuda. Golden-tail moray eels and giant anemones are visible in the sandier sections. The rich marine biodiversity is a constant, though specific seasonal aggregation events are not noted. Roatan's waters maintain a pleasant temperature range of 27-31°C year-round. This site is ideally suited for drift diving or snorkeling, allowing you to move effortlessly with the current along the reef wall. Currents can be strong, so divers should be prepared for a dynamic experience. The reef's shallow beginning also makes it accessible for snorkelers. It is shore-accessible, removing the need for boat transport for those preferring a direct entry.
