Sabalos is a vibrant reef dive located off the coast of Playa del Carmen in Mexico, forming part of the extensive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef system globally. This site, often considered an extension of the nearby Barracuda Reef, is easily accessible via a short 15-minute boat ride south of the city center, running parallel to the coastline. The reef features a distinctive platform-like structure that gradually transitions into sandy areas. Divers typically follow a drift dive profile along the sandy reef ridge, moving northward with the prevailing current. The topography includes small, wall-like formations that create horseshoe-shaped bays, offering sheltered zones where marine life congregates. These bays also provide protection from the current, allowing for more relaxed exploration. In contrast to many other shallow reefs in the area, Sabalos boasts more intricate structures, including crevices and overhangs. Marine life here is abundant and varied. During late summer, large tarpon are a common sight, giving the reef its name. Throughout the year, you can spot moray eels, lobsters, and crabs tucked into the reef's hideaways, along with a rich array of macro life. Look out into the sandy areas with seagrass for barracudas, various rays searching for food, and occasional nurse sharks. The site is rich in reef fish and corals. Sabalos is predominantly a drift dive, making it suitable for certified divers, including those with an Open Water Diver certification, though it is not a typical training site. Depths are shallow, typically ranging between 8 and 14 meters, allowing for extended bottom times of 45-60 minutes, limited more by air consumption than depth. It offers an active and diverse underwater experience.
