The Maldives Victory Wreck is a renowned dive site located near Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. This 15,000-ton cargo ship, built in 1958, sank in 1981 after impacting a reef while transporting goods from Singapore to resort islands. It now rests upright on the seabed, transformed into a vibrant artificial reef and stands as a significant part of the Maldives' maritime history and dive tourism since the late 1990s. The wreck is largely intact, with its upper sections starting at approximately 12 to 18 meters, extending down to a maximum depth of around 35 to 36 meters. Divers can explore various parts of the ship, including the cargo holds, superstructure, and the wheelhouse. This upright orientation and structural integrity provide an intriguing environment for exploration, demanding good buoyancy control due to its depth and the surrounding conditions. Over the decades, the Maldives Victory has become a thriving ecosystem, hosting an impressive array of marine life. Eighteen different coral species have colonized the wreck, attracting 38 species of fish. Divers frequently encounter groupers, fusiliers, moray eels, butterflyfish, lionfish, and triggerfish. Encounters with green turtles and various sharks are also possible, making it a rich spot for marine observation. Accessibility is convenient from Malé, with many dive shops offering day trips. While visibility is generally good, currents can be strong, particularly in the channel, requiring careful dive planning and often making it suitable for advanced divers or those with good experience. Guided dives are highly recommended, especially for less experienced individuals, to navigate the currents and the wreck safely.
