Hafsaa Thila, also known as Angotti, is a prominent coral pinnacle situated in the North Ari Atoll of the Maldives, approximately 0.8 kilometers (0.5 miles) southwest of Velidhoo islet. This dive site is celebrated for its consistently rich marine life and serves as a vital pelagic hotspot, attracting numerous large fish species. The thila itself rises from depths greater than 30 meters (98 feet) to within 10-12 meters (33-39 feet) of the surface, forming a distinctive underwater landscape. Divers typically descend to explore the pinnacle's walls and slopes, encountering a vibrant coral reef seascape at shallower depths around 10-14 meters (33-45 feet) that teems with smaller reef creatures. Deeper sections are frequently visited by larger pelagic species. The site is particularly famous for its resident grey reef sharks and whitetip sharks, which are often observed congregating, sometimes utilizing the thila as a cleaning station. Schools of fusiliers, surgeonfish, and big-eyed jacks are common, alongside sightings of moray eels, octopi, scorpionfish, and occasional turtles. The abundance of pelagic activity makes it a dynamic environment. Due to often strong currents, a swift, organized descent is essential, and the dive is generally conducted as a drift. It is recommended for advanced divers who are comfortable with current management and can execute a quick entry. Multiple dives here are common for those wishing to fully experience its diverse ecosystem.
