Gordo Banks is a prominent offshore dive site located approximately seven miles from the San Jose del Cabo marina, off Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. It consists of two submerged oceanic mountains, with Gordo 1 being the one accessible for diving. This remote location is highly regarded in the Los Cabos region for its status as a gathering point for large pelagic marine life, offering thrilling blue water diving experiences. The seamount's peak, Gordo 1, rises to about 36.5 meters (120 feet) below the surface. Dives here typically unfold around this pinnacle, allowing divers to explore the depths where oceanic currents bring nutrient-rich waters. The challenging conditions make it a demanding dive, often involving two tanks per outing, with first dives beginning around 8:00 AM and second dives at 10:00 AM after a surface interval. The primary draw to Gordo Banks is the exceptional opportunity to encounter large pelagic species. Divers frequently observe schools of tuna, jacks, and bonitas, alongside marlin, sailfish, dorado, and wahoo. Sharks, including hammerheads and silky sharks, are common seasonal visitors, with whale sharks also appearing at times. Manta, devil, and mobula rays are regularly seen traversing the water column above the seamount. Due to its exposed offshore location and depth, Gordo Banks is considered an advanced dive requiring specific certifications. Divers must hold at least an Advanced Open Water certification, and a Deep Diving Specialty is highly recommended.
