The Bay Islands of Honduras, including Roatan, are renowned for their location along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world's second-longest barrier reef. This region is characterized by lush coral, impressive sponges, and a wide array of marine life. The islands, formed by an underwater mountain range, offer dramatic walls, vibrant reefs, and intricate cracks and crevices for divers to explore. Diving in this area typically involves navigating diverse topographies such as sheer walls, shallow reefs, and offshore seamounts. Depths can range from 9 to 40 meters (30 to 130 feet), with some seamounts rising from great depths to within 12 meters (40 feet) of the surface. Specific sites often feature geological formations like canyons, trenches, and volcanic outcroppings, providing a variety of environments for exploration. The diverse ecosystem supports an abundance of Caribbean marine life, including large numbers of fish, barrel sponges, and captivating macro critters. Divers frequently encounter spotted eagle rays, barracuda, horse-eye jacks, and creole wrasses. The region is also famous for encounters with dolphins and, seasonally, whale sharks. Rare black coral is a notable feature, thriving alongside seahorses, lobsters, octopuses, and various tropical fish. Liveaboard diving typically offers up to five dives per day, including night dives, over a seven-night charter, totaling 24-27 dives. Water temperatures generally range from 25-28°C (78-84°F) in summer, and 24-27°C (75-80°F) in winter, occasionally dropping to 22°C (72°F) in January. A 3-5mm wetsuit is recommended.
