Sockeye salmon are Pacific salmon known for their silvery ocean appearance and striking red spawning coloration. Sea-going populations hatch in fresh water, grow in the Pacific Ocean, and return inland to reproduce. In the Columbia River basin, major spawning populations are associated with the Okanogan and Wenatchee systems, while the Snake River supports a much smaller, endangered population. Sockeye are important prey for wildlife and carry marine nutrients into freshwater ecosystems when they return to spawn. They also hold longstanding cultural and food value for Indigenous peoples throughout their range.
