The red-bellied piranha is a deep-bodied freshwater fish native to several South American river systems, including the Amazon basin. It is best known for its reddish underside and sharp, interlocking teeth. Although often portrayed as a relentless predator, it is an opportunistic feeder that also scavenges and eats some plant material. It forms part of Amazonian food webs as both a consumer and prey for larger fishes, birds, caimans, and other predators. Its fearsome reputation greatly exaggerates the danger it normally poses to people.

These wetland birds are recorded on Peruvian Amazon river excursions. Flooded forests, lagoons and tributaries offer different habitats; routes and water levels affect access.
