Nile tilapia is a freshwater cichlid native to parts of Africa, including the Nile basin. It is an important food fish and one of the world's most widely farmed freshwater species. Its deep body, adaptable feeding habits and parental care help it thrive in many warm-water environments. Although introduced widely outside its native range, it is a natural member of the Nile's fish community. Wild populations support fisheries and form part of the food web linking aquatic plants, invertebrates and larger predators.
