The Greylag Goose is a large, grey-brown waterbird native to Europe and parts of Asia. It is a familiar sight on the Rhine, where it uses floodplain wetlands, sheltered waters and nearby grassland. Some populations migrate, while others remain in the same region throughout the year. This species is the principal wild ancestor of most European domestic goose breeds. Its loud, honking calls often announce a flock before it comes into view.
