The great egret is a tall white heron with a slender neck, dark legs and a long pointed bill. It occupies wetlands across much of the world, from tropical mangrove lagoons to temperate river deltas. Breeding adults develop delicate back plumes that once made the species a major target of the feather trade. Its recovery in some regions illustrates successful protection, although wetland loss and disturbance remain important local pressures.

These wetland birds are recorded on Peruvian Amazon river excursions. Flooded forests, lagoons and tributaries offer different habitats; routes and water levels affect access.
