The Edible Frog is a familiar green water frog of central Europe, including the Rhine basin. It is a hybrid form derived from the Pool Frog and the Marsh Frog, rather than a conventional species with a wholly independent ancestry. Many populations maintain themselves through an unusual reproductive process called hybridogenesis. Its name reflects the historical use of these and other water frogs as food. Along the Rhine, it is most likely to occur in quiet waters adjoining the main river.
