The Common Shelduck is a large, boldly patterned waterbird with a shape intermediate between a typical duck and a small goose. It occurs across much of Europe and temperate Asia, with populations concentrated around coasts and suitable inland wetlands. Its white body, dark green head and chestnut breast band make adults distinctive. Along the Seine, it is most closely associated with the estuary and adjoining coastal wetlands rather than the urban river. Despite its English name, its presence varies considerably with habitat and season.

Seine
Riverbanks and quiet waters along the Seine provide habitat for these birds. Urban stretches and Normandy wetlands offer different viewing conditions.
