The channel catfish is a freshwater fish native to much of central and eastern North America, including the Mississippi River basin. It is an important member of river food webs, feeding on a wide variety of aquatic animals and other available foods. Its whisker-like barbels and highly developed chemical senses help it find food in murky water. Widely valued as a sport and food fish, it is also one of the principal species raised in freshwater aquaculture in the United States.

These species are documented along the Upper Mississippi corridor. An upper-river record does not promise presence on a Lower Mississippi sailing.
