The black caiman is the largest member of the alligator family and one of the Amazon Basin’s largest predators. Its dark coloration helps distinguish mature animals from the smaller caimans that share its waterways. Once severely depleted by commercial hunting for its skin, it has recovered in many areas following protection and reduced hunting pressure. Recovery is uneven, and illegal killing, habitat loss, and conflict with people remain local threats. As a large aquatic predator, it plays an important role in Amazonian food webs.

These wetland birds are recorded on Peruvian Amazon river excursions. Flooded forests, lagoons and tributaries offer different habitats; routes and water levels affect access.
