The striped snakehead is a freshwater predatory fish native to much of South and Southeast Asia, including the Mekong basin. It is particularly associated with warm, shallow waters on river floodplains. An accessory breathing organ allows it to take oxygen from the air and occupy waters where dissolved oxygen is low. It is an important food fish, harvested from the wild and raised in aquaculture. Although widespread, local populations can be affected by wetland drainage, pollution and heavy fishing.

Dolphins inhabit northern Cambodian pools towards Laos, outside typical Vietnam-delta sailings. Otters and lesser adjutants are recorded at Prek Toal on Tonlé Sap, requiring a separate lake/wetland excursion. Neither northern pools nor the reserve is automatically included on a Mekong cruise.
