Galapagos Penguin

The Galapagos penguin is the only penguin species found north of the equator in the wild. Endemic to the Galapagos Islands, these small, charismatic birds have adapted to tropical conditions thanks to the cold, nutrient-rich Cromwell Current. They are the rarest penguin species in the world, with an estimated population of fewer than 2,000 individuals. Underwater, they are remarkably agile swimmers, darting through the water at speeds of up to 35 km/h to catch small fish.

Dykketips

Galapagos penguins are frequently encountered while snorkelling or diving near the western islands. They are curious and may swim close to divers. Look for them on rocky outcrops between dives. Early morning dives offer the best chance as they are most active feeding at dawn.

Year-round, best June–September during cold season

Habitat

Rocky shorelines and lava formations of the western Galapagos Islands, particularly Isabela and Fernandina. They nest in caves and crevices in the lava to shelter from the equatorial sun.

Kosthold

Small schooling fish such as sardines, anchovies, and mullet, caught during high-speed underwater pursuits.
